Cameras, SD

This session will provide an introduction to three relatively inexpensive cameras that operate with SD memory cards that enable the user to shoot a movie and immediately present it to a class on a TV or projection unit or transfer it to a computer for editing. The cameras shown will be $100, $150, and $200 models. A few examples of classroom applications will also be shared.

Cameras, Video & Digital

Participants bring their digital cameras for this session, if possible. I will go over various tips/tricks such as editing, file size, uploading, blah, blah, blah. I could also do this for the video camera……………

Creating an Online Photo Album

Description: FrontPage has a nice feature that automatically creates a photo album in very few steps. We will take sample images (or students may bring digital images) and create a photo album using this feature. I will show a sample classroom field trip web page of photos. Phanfare.com (a photo and video album sharing service that is free for schools) can also be used to share classroom photos and videos with students, their families, and the community. http://www.bjhsoe.phanfare.com/  is an example. This service costs $60 annually for the general public, but schools may create one free account with a request submitted on stationery with a school letterhead.

Dfilm

Dfilm is a free Internet based site that allows users to quickly create and share short flash style movies. Although this is a simple application to learn, the opportunities to creatively use this resource with students are vast.

eInstruction

"You can engage every child in class material by creating an interactive learning environment in your classroom. Students who normally remain silent in class can now answer every question without fear of embarrassment. And since you see instant feedback from the entire class, you know whether to move on or continue teaching a concept. "

Equation Editor

The Equation Editor is a little-known feature of Microsoft Office that let's you put mathematical expressions into any Microsoft document. Elementary teachers will finally be able to put arithmetic problems in a document that look typeset, just like problems out of the textbook. No more drawing in division boxes by hand. Making arithmetic problems "vertical" is a snap, and fractions look like real fractions. Science and math teachers will be able to include complicated formulas that include symbols like square roots, greek letters, exponents, etc. in documents.

And the best part is that they are all easily editable graphics! Make one, copy and paste it several times, and then go back and change the numbers! A whole worksheet can be done in no time!

Google for Educators

Since Google for Educators was launched, many teachers have come to Google with stories of how Google products are helping them in the classroom. During this session we'd like to share some of the tools Google has available for Educators. The link for the web site (at least the web page with the list of tools for you classroom) is http://www.google.com/educators/tools.html.

We will not have time to cover all the tools Google has made available for educators to use in their classroom.  If you see something you find interesting, let use know and we will explore the tool together.

Make sure you check out the classroom activities link for ideas on how other teachers are using these tools. Also, be sure to check out the classroom posters.

Google Groups

This site will show you how to use your new gmail account to create and operate a user group that allows members to join and share information under the supervision of the creator. This is a fairly simple way to get a source for class information up and running that will automatically update all members when new information is added. An example of how to use this as a class blog will be presented.

Great Online Resources

Spend some time surfing website resources and finding the ones that will work for you in the classroom. This is a great opportunity to click and share with each other as well then add them to the Favorites in your browser, Google Notebook or Word Document.

Moodle

Moodle is a course management system (CMS) - a free, Open Source software package designed using sound pedagogical principles, to help educators create effective online learning communities. You can download and use it on any computer you have handy (including webhosts), yet it can scale from a single-teacher site to a 50,000-student University. (http://www.moodle.org)

To get the most out of Moodle, participants should have a unit of study in mind that they teach or intend to teach. Teachers will create, use, or modify the following activities on their personal Moodle site:

  • writing prompts

  • tests and/or quizzes

  • website addresses (supplements to whatever your unit covers)

  • assignments (PowerPoint, pamphlets, newsletters, essays, etc.)

  • discussion questions, texts, group projects, and

  • assignment/event calendars.

At the end of the session, teachers will have a website up and running. Students in their classes will be able to use the site to access information and directions, take quizzes or tests, turn in assignments, discuss controversial issues, and journal anywhere there is internet access. Teachers have the same advantage; they will be able to access their students’ responses, projects, test results, or progress anywhere there is internet access.

Movie Maker

Create a home movies using Microsoft Movie Maker....

Participants will be using Windows Movie Maker to import video, edit it, add music, titles, etc.  In the latter part of the session, we will be creating a video in the Green Screen room, then importing it back into Movie Maker for final editing.

Lights…Camera….Action. Start making movies on your computer. Windows Movie Maker is a free video-editing tool included with Microsoft Windows XP. With Movie Maker, you can turn your home movies into awesome videos that you can share across the Internet, or burn to a CD or DVD. Movie Maker is easy for anyone to use, so don't be afraid to dive in, even if you're not a computer expert.

Not really a web cam

If you are interested in an inexpensive way ($80) to capture images and audio on your PC, a web cam can be a viable option. Although the quality does not rival a document scanner (more $), the results are passable for many applications and the webcam provides for other uses as well. At least when this description went to press, the class will not show you how to work the product as a webcam because I don’t know how to do it.

Online Tools

More and more tools are available via the Web.  No longer do useful instructional tools require lengthy installations and now they can be accessed anytime and anywhere.  This session will cover several of the more popular ones, some of which are already available to District 87 staff, and ICE members:

Reading A-Z:  Basically, this is a online site for professionally produced reading resources (leveled readers, phonics, vocabulary books and activities, etc).   FYI – these leveled readers look great when you print them in booklet form from the Xerox machines.  District 87 K-2 staff – ask about getting your own personal Reading A-Z account for the Fall!

Atomic Learning:  This is a cool site and is FREE to all ICE members.  The following was copied from the website:  “Atomic Learning provides software training using a unique just-in-time approach. Our library of thousands of short tutorials on dozens of applications are focused on answering the common questions anyone may have when learning software.”

Star-Online:  Another free site for ICE members is Star-Online (developed by our friends at Western Illinois University).  This too was copied from their site:  STAR-Online's Virtual Teaching and Learning Community (VTLC) offers Staff Development Modules focusing on the integration of technology in the classroom. Participants keep track of module completions with an online Portfolio.

We will also look at a couple other tools as time permits, including a cool program for publishing your own book at www.mypublisher.com; a karaoke site for those musical folks at www.streamkaraoke.com, and several other great resources.

Open Source Software

You don’t have to be a programmer to benefit from the availability of open source software. This breakout session will show you some sites where you can download quality Open source software.

::P::

Paint.Net

http://www.getpaint.net/index2.html
"Paint.NET is free image editing and photo manipulation software for computers that run Windows. It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. An active and growing online community provides friendly help, tutorials, and plugins."
"It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free replacement for the MS Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple tool for photo and image editing."

During this session you will learn how to:

  • Crop pictures

  • Resize pictures

  • Change the color of a piece of clip art

  • Create your own backgrounds for web pages

  • Create a banner for a web page (this follows the lesson in the Feast binder)

  • Keep your pictures in PhotoStory from pixelation

PhotoStory

Photo Story is a free download from Microsoft.com. It allows users to take digital pictures and combine them into a video slide show with narration, music and titles. Participants will have hands-on time to complete a PhotoStory.
